Introduction

Momodora: Reverie Under the Moonlight is a fantastic game and I highly recommend it. I stumbled upon this game during the steam summer sale. Momodora RUtM is an action side-scrolling platformer. It's the 4th is the series and a prequel in the storyline. You play as Kaho, the last hope to remove a curse that is spreading across the land. Shooting and slashing your way through this stunning pixel world, will surely land  Momodora: Reverie Under the Moonlight into your list of great indie games.

My 10s gif turned into 120s! oops.

Design

I was immediately attracted to this game based off of only a few screenshots. Right away after getting into the game, the visuals blew me away. The atmosphere of the game as a whole is vibrant and polished. Momodora: Reverie Under the Moonlight has sensational colors, gleaming character sprites, smooth animations, gorgeous backgrounds, and an immersive soundtrack. I consider this game a flawless addition to an existing and well-established 16-bit (think super nintendo) artstyle.

Gameplay

Momodora: Reverie Under the Moonlight plays out as a side-scrolling action platformer often dubbing it as a "metroidvania" game. Your weapons are a sword, a chargeable bow, and a handful of acquirable active items. Between these I never found myself bored of the weapons given to me.  The controls are solid and responsive, an absolute breeze to pickup. Upgradeable health bar pickups are spread through-out the world, encouraging the player to search every nook and cranny. Getting to transform and play as a cat was unique and caused me excess joy.

This game took me close to three hours to beat from start to finish. That being said I played on normal difficult, ran past many enemies, and did not complete 100%. I was perfectly happy with the length it took me for completion. The most difficult part of the game for me on normal, was instantly dying to spikes.
